Scientifically and medically there is an explanation as to why the humidity makes the heat so much harder on the body. Our body has its own cooling system, which works by producing perspiration or sweat. When sweat or perspiration evaporates it gives the skin the cooling effect. We know that hot weather can tax the body, but did you know that High Humidity causes our physical cooling system to strain, as the humidity makes it harder for the sweat to evaporate? Extreme Heat causes many to lose their lives each year. There are risks for each of us if not hydrating properly, but those at the highest risk are the young, sick, old and overweight. There are many illnesses in conjunction with Extreme Heat. HEAT STROKE is caused by the body’s own air conditioning unit when it stops working. HEAT CRAMPS are muscle spasms that usually involve the legs and abdomen. This is the direct result of dehydration and can be the first sign someone is getting dangerously hot. HEAT EXHAUSTION is very serious, and more serious than cramps. The skin will be cold and clammy. The person needs cool cloths, and sips of water every 15 minutes. If there is vomiting, seek medical help.
